Newspaper Front Cover Progress 5

This is the beginning of the process of adding in my images, this is the first image I have added.

In order to allow my newspaper to follow the conventions of already existing newspapers, I have to use features which are going to stand out and be the most eye catching for the audience.

Friday 4 December 2015

Newspaper Front Cover Progress 4

The next step I took was to begin to finish off the full layout of the page. By doing this I have created guidelines for myself to use when creating the rest of the features for my front cover.
At the top of the page I have drawn two lines, the thin line at the top has been used to locate where the title is going to come to an end, and the thicker line below that is marking where the date, price and social media links are going to be located.

Towards the bottom of the page you can see three lines and a set of 5 boxes. The thin line at the top of the 3 lines is used to signal where the bottom of the story or image is going to land, the thicker line is going to have some text situated in the centre giving the company name of the adverts below. The boxes are to symbolise the adverts which are going to be created at a later stage, they have been placed there as guidelines so I know the measurements in advance.

Newspaper Front Cover Progress 3

After situating the page numbers onto my front cover I then came to the decision that in order to make it appear as realistic as possible, I should add the red arrows which are located in the bottom left hand corner of the three side story boxes.

Newspaper Front Cover Progress 2 - Font

I used 1001 fonts in order to find the perfect font which matched the one used on the Evening Chronicles front covers.
When locating the font I compared the one used on already existing newspapers to ones I could find on the website.
After searching through various amounts of pages of different fonts, I found one called LumberJack.
I then had to decide whether I wanted a clean sharp looking font or a rustic looking font, I then chose to use the Lumberjack Regular font and proceeded to use this on my front cover.

Newspaper Front Cover Progress

In order to ensure that my front cover was going to have the same aesthetic as already existing newspapers, I created the outlines for the side stories and added the coloured blocks which are a recognisable features from the Evening Chronicle.

Poster - Final touches.

Just like this poster which I created at an early stage, I am going to find the perfect font to add onto the bottom of my final poster which I have produce.

I will be placing the writing in the same location, across the centre of the bottom of the page. So far I have decided to stick with the word 'read' and I will be writing it in the colour I have chosen for the rest of my newspaper in order to follow my colour scheme.

Poster Progress 4

This is my nearly complete poster for my newspaper. I came up with various different headlines, some related to the local area which the newspaper will be published in, and some headlines which I have previously seen on other existing newspapers.
Before I could finish off my poster I wanted to see whether having the headlines in front or behind my chosen image of the Tyne Bridge would look the best. After realising it would look messy with the text in front, I decided that my final poster would have the image in front of the text.

Friday 13 November 2015

Poster Progess 3

I began adding newspaper headlines onto my poster, this is will allow potential readers to get a quick insight to what stories may be featured in my newspaper.

To achieve this look I went onto a website called Fodey, typed in my chosen headline then using the snipping tool on the computer, I captured the part of the image I wanted and uploaded it to Photoshop. This is where I began to edit the headline in order to achieve a ripped effect, I used the eraser tool to create this.

Tuesday 10 November 2015

Poster Progression 2

Instead of adjusting the contrast and brightness I chose to just add a filter and move it around.

To achieve this look I went to Filter on the toolbar, went onto Sketch then went through the list of options to find this effect.

Poster Progress

This is the image which I have chosen to use on my newspaper poster. This is an image of an iconic bridge situated over the River Tyne.
I have began to edit the image on Adobe Photoshop, this will allow me to adjust the contrast and sharpness and edit out any pieces I do not want to be featured.
This is how the top half of the poster is going to look. I have erased the sky above the bridge, and next I will begin to adjust the colour on the image in order to achieve the correct look.

Sunderland Echo - Facts and Figure

Sunderland Echo has a daily circulation of around 15,249 followed by an overall readership of 8,577 representing about 16.5% of adults in the area.

Reader profile statistics suggests that 51% of this newspapers readers are males and the following 49% are female. The most common age which was found when conducting this research was 45 and 54.

This newspaper covers a circulation area of 40 square miles, readers can be from the following areas:
Parts of South Tyneside and County Durham
Whitburn
Marsden
The Boldons
Peterlee
Horden
Seaham
Dawdon
Murton
Seaton and more.

Media Consumption

Publication
  • National quality dailies - The Telegraph
          75% from advertising
          25% from sales
  • National popular dailies - The Sun
          46% from advertising
          54% from sales
  • Regional dailies and Sundays - Manchester Evening News
          73% from advertising
          27% from sales
  • Regional paid-for weeklies - Hereford Times
          85% from advertising
          15% from sales

I will also be looking at the digital statistics of some newspapers compared to the circulation figures:

These are the circulation and distribution figures, I can look at these and compare two newspapers such as the Gazette and the Chronicle. This will allow me to  see which is more successful, guiding me with the selection of choosing which newspaper I want to use as my style model. If I choose the more popular newspaper to get inspiration from, this may help with the popularity of my piece.

The more circulation and consumption figures I look at will allow me to become more educated with the way in which newspapers are read, by who, where and when.
These are the circulation figures for The Northern Echo, this will allow me to see where a regional newspaper covers.

Radio

Radio listeners have a very close relationship with the radio stations which they listen to the most when travelling to and from places in the car and just in the house. This is why they trust what they hear on radios much more than what they do when they see something on the television or read in local newspapers.

Radio occupies over a third of the media day for 16-34s:
TV - 52%
Internet - 2%
Magazines - 2%
Video - 4%
Radio - 35%
Newspapers - 5%

Radio is intrusive, it has low advertisement avoidance levels. A study showed that advertisements which are featured on radio stations are less actively avoided than in other media, this is because listeners know that the adverts being played are not going to be on for a long time. Companies would see it as being pointless if they had a long advert on with no visual aid, the shorter the advert the more interested people stay. Listeners could just tune themselves out if they did not want to pay attention to the advert whereas if it were on the television they would turn channel because they would not want to sit and watch the advert.

Newspaper Names

I'm going to be putting the following names into a questionnaire, I will collect the data given and create a final decision based upon the most wanted name.

Bridges Daily Globe
Tyne Meridonal
NE Merdional
The NE Connection
Tyne Connection
Angel Record Herald
Bridges Record Herald
Bridges to the World
Tyneside Times
Bridges Times

Conventions of a Local Newspaper - Second Page

The next most important page in a newspaper is usually the second page which has the main story on, this is mostly what pushes the reader to purchase the newspaper. The main story is written in a fairly small font which covers the majority of the page, the page nearly always has photographs featured which link directly to the story.  The purpose of this page is to give the reader the most information they can about a recent even which has occurred. Some newspapers choose to include some extra features such as side columns which can vary from political information to music updates and job vacancies.

Newspaper Poster Attempt

This is my first attempt at trying to create my newspaper image. I am going to be using the following image as a guide but with my own local twist on it. My image is going to be featuring the Tyne Bridge which is one of the most iconic features in Newcastle, until I go and take my own images of the bridge I have used one which I found on Google in order to allow me to get an idea of what to expect when I create the poster from scratch.
By creating this with an already existing image has given me an idea of how I would like to capture the shot, it has allowed me to see that different angles will give a different effect of the bridge and could alter the way I would have to position the text.

Newspaper Poster Inspiration

This is the image which I am going to be using when creating my newspaper's poster. I found that the layout of this poster will fit in perfectly with the theme of my newspaper, although I will be using an image of the Tyne Bridge rather than an image of the twin towers; I will be creating my own newspaper headlines to feature on it concerning local problems and achievements.

Changing the brief.

Instead of producing a film or music video, I decided that I would be able to produce a tabloid newspaper which would be up to a much higher standard. By changing my decision I am now going to have to look at local newspapers to see exactly what I am going to have to produce, this will allow me to get an idea of what features I am going to have to use on my own newspaper. The brief I am now going to complete includes: The first two pages of an original local newspaper together with two of the following options: - A billboard poster for the newspaper - A radio advertisement for the newspaper - Two hyperlinked pages from the paper's website. I have decided to create a billboard poster and a radio advertisement for the newspaper along with the first two pages of an original local newspaper.

Year 13 Film Analysis

To get an idea of what I want my Year 13 coursework to look like, I watched the coursework produced by students in previous years. This allowed me to see exactly what my piece would have to include and know the standard in which I would have to reach.

Following the OCR specification, I looked at what each level included and none of the pieces I watched fell lower than level 3 meaning that they were all up to a good standard. Looking at past student's work gave me an idea of what I would have to produce and how I could go about making something which follows the specification.

Evaluation - Question 4

What would be the audience for your media product?

My ideal audience would be a teenager ranging from 14 to 18 years old who is interested in indie music. I am willing to attract both female and male to my magazine, this is because I feel like the indie genre has a mixture of both types of gender allowing my magazine to have full potential with both male and females. To make this happen I have used an image of a band featuring both males, I have carried this out to show that men can be successful artists which encourages other men and teenagers to do the same thing, to ensure I have kept both genders happy for women having two young men on the front cover of a magazine could be appealing to them attracting them to buying my magazine. I have also used a fashion section which includes clothing tips for both males and females to make them feel as equally involved. However, my magazine is music based so I have also included gossip about the celebrities personal lives to add more information and to keep the reader interested. This would appeal to my target audience exactly because their lives are sometime influenced by those of higher status. For someone who is love with music this would be an ideal magazine for them, they would have to be interested in indie music, concerts and also the lives of the famous.

This is the visual reader profile which I have just created, this shows what my target audience would be interested in; festivals, food, music, social media and alcohol for the older end of my target audience.
